![]() ![]() As far as luck is concerned I agree that it plays a part in the game, but winning is really just about maximizing your efficiency- not necessarily shooting the most, but taking the most systematic shots, and having the most methodical approach.Īdditionally I feel we can reduce the amount of luck involved and ensure the more skilled player wins by developing a more skill based scoring system. If it doesn't score immediately it generally yields a long rebound which allows for a follow up shot with the goal keeper out of position. We also frequently use the "A-B combo" in fact we do a lob pass shot to start almost every possession following a goal, or at the beginning of the game and find that it is a very efficient scoring technique. I would love a system in which I could play against other good players, but at least among the friends with whom I play, we understand that when skill levels are within a small margin, mario strikers doesn't really reflect who's better but rather who's luckier. We have games where the person with more shots on goal loses, and sometimes by a horrible margin (once a player with 2.5 times as many shots on goal lost). I understand that there are RNGs in other games and I absolutely love SMS, but if a better player cannot always beat a worse player, then it is not a game that should have a competitive scene. There are other aspects that also restrict it, although the only other one that really bothers me is the horrid player-switching system (maybe it's perfectly cyclic, but that's not helpful when everybody on your team sans one looks the same). If you could play as the goalie perhaps it would be better, but sometimes solid strategies don't work and sometimes horrible strategies (such as immediately passing and shooting when you start after an opponent's goal, or as we call it, the A-B combo) work. I actually play the GC mario strikers regularly with my friends, and I love it, but I think the biggest limiting factor that hindered its development as a true competitive game is how luck-based the goal aspects of it are.
